Do you feel like the whole world is trying to take all the space in your head? Do you feel overwhelmed, stressed, and trying hard not to loose your grip on most important matters in your life? If you’re one of those, welcome to my world. I want to share with you how I try to restore balance in my life and perhaps my hints could be of some help to you as well.
Last two months have been so intense that I had to literally cut out from certain things, take a step back and take a deep breath. It had some consequences, even on my blog, however I believe that mental health and balance is most important, not only for your own sake, but for the sake of the people who are close to you.
It’s good to log off for a while and think.
I’ve had that way too often recently. That feeling of social media and digital world constantly drilling into my head, trying to rob me from my privacy or playing with my senses and feelings.
Facebook full of photos and videos I do not want to see because it’s too much for my nerves and they often leave me shaken and depressed for many days after (as I can’t get rid of the images from my head). I ended up unfriending and blocking some of my friends and I made sure that videos don’t play automatically on my news feed.Get rid of all the negative influences around you. Cut it out or minimise it as much as you can, and instead surround yourself with positive people. Click To Tweet
Instagram – full of fakeness and that constant race for numbers, follow/unfollow game, the feeling of taking one step forward and two steps back… I still love that place because it’s very straighforward, there’s only photos, easy peasy, but I had to re-establish my goals and think WHY I’m still there. My intention is to inspire, to be a living proof that yes, you can do this too, even if you’re at you late 30’s like me. Age is no limit. YOU are your only limit.
One more thing, which might sound crazy for most, is to get rid of the TV. My friends find it strange but I don’t watch TV. I don’t even have a TV and I don’t feel the need to have one or watch it. All because of too many bad news from all around the world, and too many advertisements. Too much talking, too much noise from everywhere. It’s amazing how much time you actually have when you are no longer attached to the screen!
Try yoga and feel the power of your “me-time”.
It’s good for your physical and mental condition. Fitness has been a crucial part of my life for the last 5 years and I think this was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. Not only my body has changed, but this is also my little “escape”, my “me-time”. During that hour when I do my workout I completely switch off from all the problems and I focus on my workout. It works magic!
I’ve had different fitness episodes in my life. I started with a gym, then I got hooked on climbing together with my husband, I also did a lot of home workouts of some sort and I fell in love with Zumba and Strong by Zumba. Sometimes I run if I feel like it, and recently I’ve been absolutely captivated by yoga.

Yoga has helped me stay sane during the last two months and I cannot recommend it enough for its physical and mental benefits. Especially now when driven by a sudden subconscious impulse, one day I’ve decided to start a 30 days of yoga challenge with Adriene. I’m currently on day 23 and I haven’t skipped a single day, no matter how wrecked I was (and I really was, a few times..). I want to prove to myself that I can do this! And if I can do this, you can do this too! It’s only 20-30 minutes a day which you can dedicate entirely to yourself and do something great for both your body and mind, instead of wasting it on watching the telly or scrolling through your FB news feed on your phone. Believe me, I know.
BENEFITS OF STARTING A YOGA CHALLENGE:
Yoga is for everyone.
Absolutely everyone. There’s such a great range of exercises/poses you can choose from that there’s really NO excuses, guys! And it’s not true that you need to be flexible or super strong in order to start practising yoga. No, you don’t need to be flexible and you don’t have to do all those fancy poses, handstands, splits and all, if you’re not able to do them. You can start slow, listening to your body and with time you’ll notice gradual improvement. It’s that easy! And yoga with Adriene is a perfect choice for total beginners, so if you didn’t know where to start, now you know. Go check out her videos on youtube and see for yourself!
It gives you 30 minutes a day only for your own self.
Time for listening to your body, working on your breath, building awareness of your movement. Time when you can calm down, perhaps sweat a little and definitely improve your mood. A little mental retreat – so good to keep balance in your life, and so important.
Helps you build a habit of working out everyday.
It might seem hard at the beginning, but later you will notice that you begin to organise your time with your precious “me-yoga-time” in mind. And if you decide to take up a different sport in the meantime it will be so much easier to stick to your fitness plan.
It isn’t a secret that practising yoga brings many health benefits. It not only improves your flexibility and strength and makes you feel more relaxed and happier, but by mastering your breathing technique you improve your respiratory system and your blood pressure, which is also helpful when you’re feeling stressed. Certain yoga poses are also very beneficial for your digestive system, they might help people with thyroid problems, headaches, not to mention amazing benefits for your spine and joints. There’s so much more to it. Have a look at this article listing 38 Health Benefits of Yoga. It’s pretty amazing!
You can do yoga anytime and in any place you want.
Of course yoga classes are the best option because teachers can guide you and help you achieve proper posture while exercising, however if you can’t attend classes I strongly recommend you yoga by Adriene. She is explaining everything in so much details that if you listen carefully, there’s no way you could do yourself any harm.
If you feel like giving it a go, here is a link to Adriene’s 30 days of yoga challenge.
You are also more than welcome to join or follow my journey on Instagram using my hashtag #fitnclassyyogazone . I’m currently on day 23 but I’m a yoga newbie and you’d be able to see how I’m learning things on the way.
Quality time with your family and friends.
When you switch off or drastically limit your time spent on social media or on gazing at the television screen, you’ll gain lots of precious time which you can give to your family or friends. Sometimes it’s enough to only “be there” and show attention and care. Time is after all one of the most precious things we can give to someone. Everyone is so busy nowadays…
Go out and feel the power of nature.
A simple walk away from the city noise can make such a huge difference! I’ve noticed that since I switched to part-time and started my daily walks along the canal to collect my daughter from school, my mind feels clearer and my mood improved. It’s half an hour one way. Time when I can listen to water and to the birds singing and simply enjoy the moment. Imagine starting your day like this. Sit in your quiet garden and sip your coffee there, go to the forest and indulge in the wilderness of that place, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Feel the nature. You’ll be amazed what it does to your mind and your soul.
Nature brings back lots of amazing memories from my childhood. I used to spend each summer holidays at my grandma’s in the village, playing with my sister and my cousins, doing crazy things, riding bikes, camping, picking mushrooms, spending hours on trees, or on roofs, eating wild berries, cherries, plums and apples straight from the tree, getting horribly dirty, exploring so many new places and learning about wildlife. Whenever I come back to those memories, it feels so good… Do you have the same?
Use your hobby or learn something new.
Music and reading books is what works for me. Music is a cure for almost everything and sometimes it even works instantly. It has incredible power over my mood, it can either improve it or worsen it, so I choose what I listen to carefully. I love that sweet escape although sometimes I feel that silence is better and that’s when I read a book (usually while sunbathing in the garden and catching vitamin D – another source of happiness).
You might have a different thing which helps your brain switch off. Perhaps you like crocheting or painting or some other more or less creative activity? How about learning something entirely new? Something you’ve always wanted… Remember, it’s never too late!
Go out and have some fun.
Once in a while go out and have some fun with your friends. Forget about stress, forget about work, about problems. Relax. Chill out. Have a laugh.
When was the last time you went to a party or to a concert? When was the last time you were dancing? This is so liberating and it clears your mind. You really deserve it!
How do you cope with too much noise (both physical and mental noise) from the world? What helps you find and keep balance in your life? I’d love to learn your techniques. Please share it with me in a comment.
All the best,
