How To Heal Super Dry Hands In A Week

Do you suffer from dry skin on your hands? I do. Sometimes. I’ve noticed that when it’s cold outside or when I expose my hands to chemicals (eg. washing my hands too often), my skin gets extremely dry after a while, to such an extend that it gets cracked and sometimes it’s even bleeding on knuckles. It’s so annoying! As an addition to that my nails become very weak and brittle and the cuticles get very dry.

I’ve tried many different methods, many different hand creams. I’ve found a couple of good ones, but some made my skin even drier and stinging. That’s more or less when I started paying attention to the list of ingredients *INCI since I knew it must have been some ingredients which were not really helping. I thought I should really use something as natural as possible. Fortunately I did find a way how to treat my miserable hands at last and I’m going to share that method with you. It gave me outstanding results within only slightly over one week (using it only once a day)!

My little discovery

Those of you who know me personally also know that I’ve been crazy about products with fish collagen for the last 5 years or so. I love those products because they really helped me to significantly slow down the ageing process in my skin (and I’m 38! so you know, that’s kind of important to me…). That’s a great topic for an entirely separate post though, so I’m not going to talk about it today. Let’s concentrate on hands only (and nails) for now.

So because I knew how collagen helped to restore balance to the skin on my face, I thought I’d try to use it on my hands too. Another reason why I wanted to test it was the fact that I wanted to use a product which would be free from suspicious ingredients (I knew some of them were irritating my skin, I just couldn’t figure out which ones were the culprits). And Natural Collagen has only 5 ingredients: aqua, collagen, elastin, caprylyl glycol and lactic acid. That’s all.

Collagen and elastin are responsible for maintaining proper hydration of our skin. Collagen is also responsible for the healing processes – when you cut or scald your skin, it’s thanks to collagen that it heals itself. Knowing that, it would seem only logical that Natural Collagen should be a great ally in fighting dry and damaged skin.

So here’s what I did:

(once a day, every day right before bed time):

  1. Washed my hands with a MILD SOAP (SLS-free, because it’s a strong irritant). I used Collagen Wash Gel which I also use as a face wash and make-up remover, you can use a mild soap, but make sure it IS mild (I wouldn’t recommend liquid soaps as they usually contain SLS-es).
  2. Used a gentle SCRUB (only once or twice a week is just enough, to get rid of dead skin cells and help collagen particles absorb into my skin better)
  3. Applied 2 pumps of NATURAL COLLAGEN Platinum and gently massaged it into my WET skin. For hands any type of Natural Collagen would be great: Platinum, Silver or Graphite, or even PURE Native Collagen from Colway International. I used Platinum because I had it open – it’s my night-time face serum.
  4. Waited for about 3 minutes till the gel got absorbed by the skin.
  5. Applied my HAND CREAM. (I used Elave cream back then, and later also Hydro from Colway International which turned out to be really good as well)

During the day I also tried to use my hand cream each time after washing my hands, and I also applied Organic Manuka Honey Cuticle & Nail Solution (dr.organic) for my cuticles which is one of my “must-have’s”. I give more details about these products closer to the end of this article.

EFFECTS after one week of using this treatment:

  • silky soft, smooth skin in touch (seriously, I was so impressed I kept asking my husband to touch my palms (lol), I couldn’t believe they could be so smooth and delicate!)
  • dryness was gone
  • hands felt amazingly delicate and perfectly moisturised
  • nails were shiny and stronger than before (I didn’t even want to wear nail polish, which I normally do like… all the time)

TIP: I would recommend this treatment to be repeated at least twice every day for faster results (or even better – each time after you wash your hands) and use it regularly to maintain these amazing effects!  Since I work 9 – 5 and you need to wait for the collagen gel to get absorbed, it was rather difficult to do at work, that’s why I was using it only before bed time. I’m pretty sure if I repeated that treatment a few times throughout the day I’d get the effects faster.

The pictures below show my hand at a milder state. It used to be worse but I did not document it back then because I didn’t expect the effects to be so amazing. Photos have not been edited and they show the results after only one treatment / one application of Natural Collagen Platinum onto my palms.

Now let’s have a closer look at the main products used for this treatment:

Natural Collagen Platinum, Silver or Graphite (Colway):

It’s a pure fish collagen serum in a form of a gel. Biologically active in its native triple-helical form, which breaks down into microscopic particles by the heat of your skin. It has only 5 ingredients: aqua, collagen, elastin, caprylyl glycol and lactic acid. Natural Collagen stimulates our cells to produce more collagen in a natural way, and therefore helps our skin regenerate faster. It also restores its proper hydration and elasticity and improves skin’s pigmentation. Natural Collagen comes in three different degrees of pigmentation and you can use it for hands and feet, face, hair and the whole body. If you want to read more details about this product, you can find that HERE.

Application:

This gel should be applied on clean wet skin and left there till it’s completely absorbed. When that happens you actually feel that your skin is tight. Don’t worry, it’s a desirable affect. To get rid of this unpleasant feeling it’s enough to apply a moisturiser. Natural Collagen is very sufficient. A bottle of 50ml should last for about 3 months (if you use it 1-2 times a day)! You can use it on your hands as many times as you want, even after each wash but it’s very important to use it regularly every day.

Where to buy it:Native Collagen PURE

Unfortunately this product is not available in shops and you can only get it from a representative.

In Ireland you can order it directly from HERE.

If you live in a different country, you can shoot me a message and I’ll do my best to direct you to the nearest representative.

Alternatively for all European countries, there is an equivalent of Natural Collagen sold by Colway’s sister company: Colway International. It’s called Native Collagen PURE. You can order it directly from HERE.

Sensitive Intensive Cream (Elave):

This hand cream is very mild and from all the hand creams I’d tested before, this one was the only one which did not make my hands feel dry or stinging after a while. That’s why I loved it! It contains coconut oil and is great for eczema and dermatitis prone skin. It really is an amazing hand cream! And what’s also great is the fact that it’s available in three different capacities: as a tube in either 50g or 125g or in a larger container with a pump for an extremely easy application (500g – wow!) I actually love the whole series because it’s very gentle for the skin, and very effective at the same time. I use their cream for my daughter’s skin too.

You can order it from HERE.

Organic Manuka Honey Cuticle & Nail Solution (dr.organic):

It has quite intensive smell of honey so some people may not like it but it doesn’t bother me at all. This is a product I just can’t do without. Immediately after application my nails are unbelievably shiny! At first it feels a bit oily but it gets absorbed very fast leaving you with a feeling of soft cuticles and healthy nails. I keep it in my handbag and use it as often as I want. (* it’s Certified Organic!)

You can order it from HERE.

How do you treat your dry hands?

Perhaps you have your own method which also works? Or perhaps you have a way of preventing your skin from drying? I know drinking a lot of water and avoiding contact with irritants really helps but maybe you know some other ways too? Let me know in a comment below. And if you have any questions, don’t be shy – ask me.

All the best,

Anna

This is awesome! My hands have been so dry lately, but sometimes I hate putting lotion on them because then they sweat like crazy.

Thank you for your comment, Anna. I know what you’re saying and I also hate that feeling. Those two hand creams I’m recommending are great because they get absorbed by the skin very fast and they don’t give you that feeling. That’s why I love them so much 🙂
