I remember days back from high school when I used to get up at 6:00am and go out for a short run or a swim in the nearby swimming pool (more like a splash in jacuzzi I’d say, cause I can’t really swim…). I remember days when I used to get up at 6:00am only to open my planner and plan the whole day ahead, review my goals and set my mind on the right track. I remember days when I used to get up at 6:00am only to make sure that I look and feel amazing, to have perfect hair and makeup and to eat a delicious breakfast before work… I remember that amazing feeling afterwards, I had more energy, days seemed longer, people seemed nicer and I was happy that I did something good for myself.
Me, a person who absolutely LOVES sleeping long in the morning, wilfully kicking my own ass out of bed at sunrise… Could you believe that?
Yes, occasionally I have those moments when driven by a higher purpose or simply feeling fresh and energetic (usually because of a gorgeous weather), I wanted to start my day early and enjoy the perfect silence in the morning. At home or outside. And you know what? I began to miss those moments now.
That strange feeling usually comes to me in spring, when days are getting longer and it’s getting warmer and drier (I live in Ireland, mind that!). And it got me now! But honestly, thinking about it, wanting it and actually DOING this are two entirely different worlds. For me – a night owl type of person, who likes staying till late at night – getting up at 6am sounds nearly impossible. I need at least 7 hours sleep, otherwise after a few days of not sleeping enough, I begin to look like a zombie and my “killing mode” is triggered automatically (only kidding 😉 just terrible grumpiness it is… still feeling sorry for those who get in my way though…). That is usually solved quickly by a longer nap, fortunately… 😉 but still… ah.
So how I managed to change that?
- The day before, I made a strong decision that I WOULD get up at 6:00 and go for a run.
- On the actual day, when the alarm clock rang, I GOT UP, got ready and went out for a run.
That’s it. Sorry if I disappointed you….
ehmm ehmm… actually there is something very important missing here: DO NOT THINK and DO NOT DARE TO CLOSE YOUR EYES AGAIN!!!! In the morning, when you turn off the alarm clock, move quickly! Get out of bed before your troll inside your head wakes up and starts blabbing that you must be totally crazy, cause look! It’s TOO early! C’mon, are you out of your mind? It’s the middle of the night, it’s too cold outside, you’ll catch a flu or something… Listen to me! You’re still sleepy, just close your eyes for only 5 minutes, just 5 more minutes and then you can get up, you’ll feel better after those extra 5 minutes… Ahhh, noo… you can do it tomorrow! Tomorrow is gonna be better, I’m telling you… – sounds familiar?
Do not let this damn little bastard kill your will and determination. Do not let him speak. Wake up, get dressed, and leave the house before he realises what you’ve just done :p You gotta trick him! 😀
That’s the whole secret. And only this works for me. But it works ONLY when I make a very strong decision the day before, so I need to have my mind ready for this, set on this particular course.
So I did it yesterday. It was MONDAY. Who loves getting up early on Mondays? Hands up 😉 … Ha! I thought so 😉 To me it was only a coincidence that it happened to be Monday. Any other day is good for a fresh start. I’m not planning to run every morning, rather maybe every second one. But if you’re thinking about doing this too, and you have similar problems like me, you know YOU CAN DO IT and it’s worth an effort cause the feeling afterwards is amazing, your whole day seems nicer and you have more energy. Most of all you love yourself more, you get that incredible feeling of pride cause hey! you’ve just won the first battle – a battle with your own troll inside your head! So now you can walk with your chin up, feeling stronger and more self-confident.
Remember: Nothing will work unless YOU DO.
Have a lovely day friends :*
How is your Tuesday going? 🙂
